Career Highs and Lows
Marilyn's bout with prescription pills soon took her on a downward spiral.
She showed signs of depression and had become seriously ill while filming
"There's No Business like Show Business." In 1954 during the
filming "Seven Year Itch" Marilyn Monroe posters of the famous
skirt blowing scene began to appear everywhere.
Marriage and Divorce
Her popularity was still on the rise while her personal life was suffering.
By the fall of 1954 her marriage to Joe
DiMaggio was over. Although this was devastating for Marilyn her pursuit
of love kept on.
She married for the third time June 29th 1956 to Arthur
Miller. She was impressed by the fact that he represented serious
theatre since she so desperately wanted to be taken seriously as an actress.
Marilyn's Comeback
After a three year absence in Hollywood she made her comeback in film
getting rave reviews for her performances in "Bus Stop." "The
Prince and the Showgirl" and "Some Like it Hot."
Addictions and Affairs
Although she was at the height of her career her addiction to prescription
drugs began to take affect her career as she could not remember her lines
and was often late to the set. She continued making films such as "Let's
Make Love" and "The Misfits" despite an unhappy marriage
and the depression that seemed to be consuming her. She began seeing a
psychoanalyst for her problems and soon after in 1961 ended another unsuccessful
marriage.
A
reported affair with John
F. Kennedy began in 1961. Before long it was suspected that not only
was she having an affair with the president she was seeing his brother
Bobby too. You can read the FBI
- Freedom of Information Act, 97 page (pdf) file about about Marilyn's
alleged affairs and speculation about her death.
Marilyn's Death
In 1962 she began production on "Something's Got to Give." She
began seeing Joe DiMaggio again and before long they set a wedding date
for August 8, 1962. She would never have the chance to see if love would
last this time due to her untimely death on August 5, 1962.
The controversy over her death
still weighs on the minds of the people who cared for her. Joe DiMaggio
in her memory had flowers delivery weekly to her crypt for twenty years
after her death.
